Doris just sat there in her chair, facing the computer. Her fingers lightly on the keyboard, waiting for something deep and meaningful to flow onto the page with grace, like a beautiful painting. NOT!
The holidays were over and there was PEACE. The sounds of Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, and George Jones, were playing on the stereo.
She was thinking how quickly Christmas comes each year, and how quickly it goes. Although, the anxiety of it all is less and less as the years go by. No wondering with her heart all a flutter about what she would be getting. No peaking through the wrapping paper or feeling the present until she guessed what it was. No waiting until Hubby went to work to remove the scotch tape and gently sliding the present out of the package to view it and then returning it and re taping it. Things were so much more simple now. Just tell them size 10, color blue, elastic waist.
She had gotten her "Pedegg" for her birthday, just a few days before Christmas. Her heels are soft and supple now. She got flannel lined jeans from her Mother-in-law. Hubby had gotten her the beautiful diamond ring before Christmas. Her daughter and her husband, got Doris a very nice metal sign for the barn. "Crandell Farm" She got many wonderful gifts, too many to mention.
She was truly blessed.
Doris received a very interesting gift from her dear friend Kim. It was a bird house, designed to provide shelter for maybe 10 birds. It was about two feet high and 10 inches wide. It was made from two inch treated boards. She had wondered how she would hang this wonderful handmade piece. It weighed about 300lbs. After renting a forklift from "Tour Con", she was able to hoist the birdhouse up and mount it to a tree. Unfortunately, the twenty year old maple could not handle the weight and came crashing down. So, Doris decided to put the birdhouse on the stump that remained, after cutting the maple tree into firewood. She will do that as soon as her hernia is healed.
New Years was rather quiet around the house, and that was fine, because Hubby had been sick with the intestinal "grip", through Christmas. He was all well by New Years, but neither of them felt like partying. So, they enjoyed a very nice meal at home. Doris was asleep on the couch by 9pm. However she awoke in time to hear the countdown on tv, and see good old Dick Clark say, "Haffy Nooo Yeaaaw"
Doris was thinking, its now time to get back to the ole grind. The grind she loves so well. After all it is a new year. That means its time to start thinking about getting those horses fit for another season of racing. However, this year will have a slight twist. Her daughter is due to foal in early April, and Doris has agreed to care for the little tyke. This will mean juggling the baby sitting and the horse training. Not to fear, she has a network of help waiting. Two great grandmothers, a host of relatives and a couple of dear friends have offered to help. Which means she can get some work done if she doesn't tarry, while someone else watches the baby. By the way, Its a boy!
All in all, Doris is pretty content. Thats not bad considering all that are not content in this world. Anyone that got a "Pedegg" new flip-flops, "Mighty Putty", and a big ole diamond ring is pretty lucky. Lets not forget the "Burly Bird house".
Funny statements I have heard:
While playing a game of charades about holiday songs and movies. My mother yelled out her guess "The day they gave children away" ?????
Anyone heard of that one?! haha
"why did you dye your hair gray?"
"Is your horse sick to his stomach?" "I saw him eating grass like my dog does when his stomach is upset."

I wish you'd write more often but your stories are worth the wait. The elastic waist, the haffy new yeaww, the tree, the hernia, the foaling, the day they took the children... all hilarious stuff!!! You need to be published in the quirky magazine called "Twisted Humor Weekly". I don't think it exists yet but I should be the publisher and you could be my crack reporter.Hahahahahahah!!!
seeing there's a new story on here is almost as good as getting a Christmas present!!! Keep it up keep it up keep it up. (don't ask your mom who said that.. she might give you an answer!!)j
I just re-read your story here to David. He chuckled a bit which is pretty good for him but I had to wipe my eyes and catch my breath a time or two. I swear it was even funnier this time!!!
