As the leaves begin to fall and the weeds begin to shrink back into the landscape I get a view of the my farm that I dont see all summer. I was inspired to mow some of those multi flora roses in the woods and improve the view even more. I fired up the old Ford tractor(1955), with the bush hog and away I went. I started to mow where no man has ever set foot much less mowed it. It was on a pretty steep incline, but I figured if I planned my course right I could get it done. I started at the top of the hill and went straight down assuming there werent any downed trees in the path. I made my first swipe and it was successful. Okay, I thought. Just go back around the woods and keep making passes at it til I get it done. I made several passes and it was really looking good. It was so nice to see the trees without those weeds and bushes suffocating them. I drove over several small downed trees, but that was no problem because I had the mower set high so it didnt affect anything. I was now feeling confident enough to make some passes going up hill. I started between a couple of trees and there I was, wedged. The back tires on the tractor were wedged between the trees. That creepy feeling of being on a hill and having to put it in reverse. Not to panic just ease into reverse and gouge it a little. Yes, I was free.
I went along my way mowing and boy, was it ever looking good. The sun was shining through the trees and the ground was cleared. All of a sudden, the tractor started crawling towards the sky. The front end was rearing up and I was hanging on. Thats when the brain says, clutch! brake! throttle down! I got everything halted. Looked around to see what was the matter. Well, I had run up on an old tree stump that dislodged from the ground and the tractor had just kept going til it climbed it and the stump was under the front end of the tractor. I am on the hillside, tractor front end all reared up. Believe it or not it backed down off of the stump. Thats when I thank the old Ford for being so low to the ground and not the tippy kind.
I was about done for the day. When ever I do something like this, I dont really finish, I just say stop while you are ahead.
I started to come up the hill and catch a couple of spots that I missed, sort of a final pass through, when I got stuck between a tree and a stump. The stump was one of my typical cut jobs, in that I left it about two feet high. It wasnt a big stump, just small enough to bend when the tractor when past. So now the tractor tires where wedged big time. The tree on the left was preventing the tractor from going up the hill and the stump on the right had flipped behind the right tire, preventing it from going down the hell. HMMMMMM really fixed now, besides being very steep.
It was time to get out the chain saw. I know where it is too. Right over there wedged in that downed tree I was trying to cut yesterday. Yes, caught in a bind. Sticking straight out of the tree. No problem, I just got a chisel and hammer and had it out of there in no time. Of course the chain was hanging on by a thread by now. But, typical me, I don't have time to tighten it. That would require stopping by the shed and fixing it right. I cut the stump to the ground and freed my tractor one more time. On that note, I called it a day.
I bet you thought I was going to turn the tractor over. Nope. However, Yesterday I got a little too brave mowing down by the ravine and buried it about a foot deep in the mud. Just cant leave well enough alone. While my sister was firing up the Alis Chalmers to pull me out, the neighbor came by with his big ole dully truck and pulled me out. I was on my merry way.
And that was yesterday.

A chisel, hammer and a chainsaw. Who neeeds more than that? I love it!! Sounds like a typical farm day to me!!! You are MUCH braver than I am though. If it's a hill, I'm not up to the thrill.
I'd say you're not OSHA approved. You never mentioned gauntlet gloves, helmet, fire safe clothing, permits, steeltoe boots with pantlegs fastened down, safety harness to keep you at a perfectly level level at all times, eye protection, earplugs, noncombustible gasoline etc.......
Now, tell us what you did today!! I'll be waiting......
i do believe you are from the same branch of the family tree as cousin kim and me... like kim, i am not into the going UPhill. Come to think of it, after bringing a fully loaded grain cart, in the dark, down a really, really steep hill last week (or having it bring ME)maybe I'll just stay off hills. awaiting the next adventure!
